|The Clubs History:|
The Club was originally known as Powick Hospital Bowling Club, being formed in 1961, at the Powick Mental Hospital by a Mr Parker-Morgan who was a consultant at the hospital. The games were played in the hospital grounds and very often watched by the patients, who were always accompanied by nurses. Teas were prepared by the hospital catering staff and provided in the hospital dining room, the teas having a reputation for their quality and quantity.
The hospital closed in 1983, when it moved to Ronkswood, and the greens were literally ploughed up. The Club shared the Kay’s green at the Cinderella ground for one year and dropped the word Hospital from their title. Because Kay’s did not want two bowling clubs using their green, the Club applied to use the green at Cripplegate Park, where they have now played for 20 years.
The Club had become successfully established there and has formed part of the consortium for Cripplegate bowlers with the other 6 clubs managing the bowling facilities at the park. Pat & Peter Stokes have run the Club for 20 years and are two of the trustees managing the Consortium.
